GD-ROM drive
The GD-ROM drive is the optical storage drive used by the Dreamcast console, and the primary way of loading programs on the console.
Supported Media
The GD-ROM drive supports GD-ROM, CD-ROM, and CD-R discs.
Disc Read Performance
The drive in real-world scenarios has been benchmarked to clock in anywhere between 500 to 1100 kilobytes per second, depending on where on the disc the data is written and the disc used.
Security
The GD-ROM security can be disabled by use of a System Disc 2. In addition, the MIL-CD storage format can be used to burn homebrew programs to CD-R discs that will boot without the need for modifying the console, on any console that supports the MIL-CD format (see MIL-CD compatibility for details).
